The Way Back Home tells the story of Toby, a 20-year-old orphan and university student who is just learning about love and what to do with his life in 2019, and Eleanor, a brilliant but awkward 58-year-old widow who is fighting to be heard in the male-dominated field of mathematics in 1962.
In this tale with them is a Physics professor desperate to time travel and change the tragic accident that killed his daughter, a mysterious prophet, and a loveable but impulsive child/woman whose life intersects Toby’s and Eleanor’s in both the 1960s and the 2000s.
After his girlfriend unexpectedly time-jumps to the past, Toby follows, landing at the vibrant backdrop of the 1962 World’s Fair in Seattle, where visions of “Century 21” are on everyone’s minds. Trying to find his girlfriend, the professor and Eleanor become his obsession as he navigates this different decade with limited funds.
The story reaches its climax during the tumult of the 1962 Columbus Day Storm, a pivotal moment when each character must confront their fate: If Toby chooses to remain anchored in the past, what are the consequences? If Eleanor decides to leap into the future, what is the impact? At stake are the most fervent aspirations of their hearts along with Toby’s very existence and Eleanor’s dream of finding connection.
Wool Dresses in Summer: A Woman’s Fiction, 2019
Since early childhood, Anna Sinclair has been able to sense when death was nearby, but despite these precognitions, she has never been able to change the outcome. When a vivid prescience foretells that her non-believing husband will lose his life in a boating accident, she tells him what she believes. His reaction is to leave Anna and their family anyway to go to Minnesota and attend a boat school. She is distraught.
A visit from her grandmother’s friend Essie leads Anna to learn that many women in her ancestral line shared the same ability. But in Port Townsend, Washington, where her grandfather had been the longtime mayor and social conformity was the norm, each of these women had been fierce about keeping their ability a secret.
Desperate for answers, Anna takes her children to her mother’s home for a few weeks, hoping to dig into the tangled lives of her foremothers. For Anna, the stakes could not be higher. Are the fates she sees coming set in stone, or can they be changed? What is the point of her gift if she can’t use it to change the worst fate of all?
What she comes to learn is that the protective wall around this secret has also kept other family secrets in the dark, the revealing of which will shake her preconceived notions of her family to its core.
